Q. How do I cite an article, book, or other reference that I found cited within another source (secondary source)?

Answer

Please see pg. 173, section 6.09, of the APA Manual, 6th edition for information about citations within quotations, and pg. 178, section 6.17, for information about secondary sources. Included below is an example of how to cite a secondary source in-text.

In his e-mails, Smith argued that asynchronous line dancing would be the next Internet meme (as cited in Jones, 2010).

In this example, the Jones reference will need to be included on your References list, not the Smith reference.

For additional information about citing secondary sources, including when they are appropriate to use, please see the APA Blog entry here
