How do I cite a document from ERIC in APA Style?

Answer

ERIC does not provide generated APA citations for its indexed content. One option would be to locate the same title in the Library's NavigatorSearch (formerly Roadrunner) and use the Cite feature there. This technique works well for journal articles and books. For instructions on locating an article by title in the library, see the library's FAQ here. Remember to check the citation for proper APA Style by using the APA Publication Manual 7th edition.

To manually format your ERIC citations in APA Style, first, identify what type of resource it is. Is it a journal article? A dissertation? A conference proceeding? Follow the correct format according to the APA Publication Manual 7th edition.

Additional documents such as reports, working papers, etc. exist only in ERIC. If you are citing one of these resources, it is important to note that the report number should be included and the ED# should be in parenthesis at the end of the citation. You may find this information on the document record that you will access within ERIC. See the format and example below.

Format:

[Author last name], [First initial]. [Middle initial]. [Publication year]. [Title of document] (Document or Report number). [ERIC]. [Document URL]

Example:

Jacobs, G. M., Teh, J., & Spencer, L. (2019). A proposal for facilitating more cooperation in competitive

        sports (ED573929). ERIC. https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED573929.pdf

The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides access to Academic Writer, which provides over 200 sample references, as well as 10 sample papers. It also incorporates all of the references and other content from the Publication Manual; the APA Style Guide to Electronic References, Seventh Edition; and the APA Style Blog. See the ASC's FAQ on formatting a reference to help you find sample references.
