Learning to accept feedback is a vital skill that is a necessary part of the dissertation journey. The context and the person giving the feedback need to be taken into consideration, and students should realize that their instructors are here to help and support them to success. Instructors’ comments can often be misconstrued as commands or criticism, and when receiving feedback on their work students can often tend to feel confused, anxious, or even offended. Students can and should learn to accept feedback, reflect on it critically, and use it to improve or enhance their work. By approaching the concept of feedback metaphorically will assist both new and existing graduate students to better understand the process of learning how to accept and actually use the feedback that is provided. This fun approach is based on animals. New graduate students can often start somewhere between the hedgehog, bunny, and bear! Alternatively, you may find that you fluctuate between the golden retriever, raccoon, and cat! Let’s look at the various animal options and come up with some of your own creative ideas too. In the process, you will come to better understand the value of the feedback that you receive, and ensure that you can use and apply it to improve and enhance your work.
