How can I import a citation to my RefWorks account?
RefWorks:
There are several methods for adding citations to your RefWorks account: 1) Upload Document; 2) Save to RefWorks; 3) Direct Export; 4) Import References; and 5) Manual Entry.
For databases that do not allow for direct export into RefWorks, we suggest following the steps below to import citations into RefWorks using Upload Document:
- First, navigate to the article abstract/details page in database.
- Find an icon to download the PDF. Save the article to your computer.
- Go to RefWorks, click the plus sign icon, and select Upload Document.
- Browse to find where you saved the article on your computer.
- The upload may take a minute to process. RefWorks will scan the document for bibliographic information.
- Your citation, including the full-text PDF, will be available in your Last Imported folder.
More information is available in the Managing References: Uploading Citations as References guide page.
To learn more and see a demonstration of these processes, please view the Library's Introduction to RefWorks Workshop Video, located on RefWorks Guide.
SpringerLink
Note: You can only export one record at a time.
1. Click on the title of the item that you wish to export.
2. Click on the Export Citation button under Reference tools.
3. A drop-down menu will appear with several choices for citation file format. Select .RIS format. SpringerLink provides two options in .RIS format. It does not matter which one is selected, since it is the file format or extension that is important. RefWorks can read the .RIS format and convert it to a readable citation.
4. Once you select either .RIS option, your internet browser will download and add the file to your Downloads folder.
Import RIS file to RefWorks
Follow these instructions below for importing a .RIS file to your RefWorks account, regardless of the database.
1. Log in to your RefWorks account. From the gray menu bar, under References, select Import.
2. An import dialog box will open. Select RIS Format for both the data source and the database.
3. Browse to locate the RIS file that you downloaded from the database. It should be in your Downloads folder, unless you moved it to a different location.
4. Click Import to finish the process. You can locate your imported citation in your References or search for it using the search box at the top right of the page.
