Many online journal articles are assigned a unique alphanumeric string called a Digital Object Identifier. This is similar to an ISBN for a book; the string serves as a unique identifier and can also act as a permanent link to the article, so these articles can be tracked down easily.
Not every article will have a DOI. We have an FAQ on How to find a DOI number.
