Can I find articles that show that the lack of something has negative effects?

In scholarly literature, it is not likely you will find articles that “prove” that a lack of something is a problem. Instead, you will see that scholarly literature examines a variable and the impact of it. However, there are some things you can try:

  • In terms of search methods, sometimes, you can replace “lack” with alternative keywords. For example, 'underrepresentation’ of women in senior management, or "father absence
  • In other instances, you can remove “lack of,” and shift your focus on how the existence of x can make an impact (because the article may address the lack as well).
    • For example “the importance of networking for black female entrepreneurs” instead of “how lack of networking hinders black female entrepreneurs."
    • Or, instead of searching how lack of parental involvement impacts academic achievement, search simply for: ("parental involvement" AND "academic achievement").
    • Similarly, instead of looking at "lack of motivation" in students, try adding synonyms. If we search for ("motivation" OR "engagement" OR "involvement" AND "students") , the results will likely discuss lack of motivation without having to type that into the search box.
